Como parte del Club del Single del sello francés Too Good To Be True, encontramos este vinilo 7” del grupo noruego de Bergen, LOVE DANCE, con dos fantásticas canciones de tecno-pop elegante y sofisticado.
Mi favorita: Parallel lines.
Tercera edición de Indietracks a la que voy, y primera tocando el cielo, y es que ya no sólo confieso que es mi festival favorito del mundo, sino que este año, además de como espectador, también acudía como artista, y por partida doble, ya que el sábado tocaría con VACACIONES, y el domingo con MINIBAR, que encima seríamos las dos únicas bandas españolas este año. El fin de semana festivalero más deseado del año adelantaba sus fechas para no coincidir con las Olimpiadas, así Indietracks 2012 se convertía también en el primer festival de este verano.
Cada vez convencemos a más amigos para acudir al festival, amigos todos ellos que quedan encantados ante sus maravillas, y algunos seguro que hasta repetirán el año que viene. El punto más negativo ha sido la aparición de la lluvia en algunos conciertos importantes, lo que te cortaba un poco el rollo y la euforia del momento; también el no poder ver conciertos enteros, porque se solapaban las actuaciones en los distintos escenarios.
Es éste un festival mágico y especial, indie en su máxima expresión, ya que no genera beneficio y algunos de los grupos que tocan no tienen ni siquiera un álbum editado, pero gozan del prestigio de la crítica musical más seria. La gente acampa en el lugar o se distribuye por los hoteles de las localidades más cercanas, esos fabulosos Premier Inn…
Hay gente que acude con toda su familia, y músicos que se dejan ver por el festival aunque no toquen. Ese es el caso este año de Helen King (SHRAG), Miguel (THE FELT TIPS), Dan Popplewell (OOBERMAN, THE MAGIC THEATRE),… El ambiente es agradable y acogedor, tanto que los grupos suelen venir a pasar todo el fin de semana, por norma general, quedándode a disfrutar de la gran oferta musical que se ofrece allí.
Las actuaciones se distribuyen, como en años anteriores, entre dos escenarios principales, uno al aire libre (outdoor) y otro en una nave (indoor), un tercer escenario que se desarrolla en una iglesia, y otro que sólo funciona a mediodía, y que tiene lugar… en un vagón de un tren de vapor durante un trayecto de unos 30 minutos dónde el maquinista te lleva por unos lugares paradisíacos de esta bonita zona de las East Midlands. También es tradición ya improvisar un cartel en la carpa del mercadillo, dónde tienen lugar actuaciones acústicas.
Este año había un homenaje al sello Slumberland, que era el encargado de programar las actuaciones del escenario principal, algo parecido a lo que pasó hace 3 años con Elefant Records.

THE SMITTENS. Llegamos al recinto en los últimos compases de THE SMITTENS, banda que ya vimos hace un par de años. Las actuaciones de este primer día, que solían tener lugar en el escenario principal, al aire libre, se trasladaron al cubierto, para evitar la lluvia.

THE SCHOOL. Uno de los momentos del festival. Y es que escuchar las nuevas canciones de Liz Hunt y compañía es una delicia que no tiene precio. No sólo se limitaron a su impresionante nuevo álbum recién publicado por Elefant (‘Reading too much into things like everything’), sino que sonaron piezas clásicas como “I want you back” o “Shoulder”, todas ellas bien adornadas por mini-sección de cuerda y trompeta, con una fantástica banda que siente y transmite como pocos el mejor sunshine pop atemporal.

DARREN HAYMAN & THE SECONDARY MODERN. Darren Hayman, el ex-líder de HEFNER, bien arropado por su banda “The Secondary Modern”, sería el encargado de cerrar esta primera jornada en cuanto a actuaciones se refiere, ya que luego la gente se quedaría hasta la medianoche bailando con los djs.

LOVE DANCE son un grupo de pop de Noruega, de la ciudad de Bergen, que nos ha llamado la atención con un par de canciones que tenían grabadas, con el nombre de
TRY HAPPINESS, nombre que finalmente han cambiado por el de LOVE DANCE…
1. ¿Quiénes sois LOVE DANCE? ¿De dónde sois? ¿Qué tocáis cada uno? ¿desde cuándo lleváis?
LOVE DANCE somos Eirik, 22 años (guitarra solista y caja de ritmos), y Kristopher, 25 años (guitarra y voz), quiénes creamos el grupo hacia finales del 2003 después de haber estado hablándolo durante dos años. Kjetil, 25 años (bajo), lleva con nosotros desde la pasada primavera. Somos todos de Bergen (Noeurga).
2. ¿Por qué el nombre de LOVE DANCE? Antes teníais un nombre distinto, TRY HAPPINESS, ¿por qué lo cambiásteis?
Porque ‘we tried happiness’ (probamos felicidad), pero no iba con nosotros… jeje… no, ya en serio, queríamos un nombre que no desviara la atención fuera de la música, y un nombre que no fuera parecido a otros… y para ser honesto, este nos gusta más.
3. ¿Quién escribe las canciones? ¿Qué os hace escribir esas canciones tan bonitas? ¿De qué van vuestras letras?
Las canciones nacen de una interacción entre Eirik y Kristopher, que tienen claras visiones de cómo quieren que el grupo suene. Las canciones van de todos los referentes en los que nuestras vidas se basan, y que van desde la literatura a la música, el fútbol o el amor. Se puede decir que algunas de nuestras letras están basadas en relaciones.
4. ¿Qué grupos influyen en el sonido de LOVE DANCE?
Aquí hay que establecer una distinción entre los grupos que nos gustan y aquellos que influyen directamente en el sonido del grupo. Los que influyen en el sonido de LOVE DANCE son aquéllos asociados con la escena post-punk / new wave / indiepop, y los grupos que han bebido directamente de éstos.
5. ¿Cuántas canciones tenéis escritas? ¿Cuántas habéis grabado?
Tenemos unas 9-10 canciones, que están siempre en proceso de ser grabadas.
4 canciones han sido ya maquetadas.
6. Me parece que vais a grabar un ep y un álbum con el sello alemán ‘Marsh Marigold’. ¿Cómo fue el flechazo con la etiqueta alemana?
Lo primero es grabar un ep en vinilo 7” para Marsh Marigold, y eso es en lo que estamos concentrados ahora. Nos pusimos en contacto con la compañía, como coleccionistas de discos que somos, ya que compramos sus discos. Hemos tenido siempre a ‘Marsh Marigold’ como un sello entandarte a nivel europeo de la música que nos gusta. Además, nuestros grupos favoritos graban para Marsh Marigold.
7. ¿Y para cuándo saldrá el ep? ¿Qué canciones tendrá? ¿Y el álbum?
No hay una fecha de momento, pero a ver si hay suerte y sale para final de año. Estamos trabajando en 4 canciones para este ep, que son “Stay handsome!”, “What does this tell you?”, “You should know where I’m standing” (por supuesto una versión distinta y mejorada de la que aparece en el cd que acompaña a este fanzine!!) y “A month of sundays”.
8. ¿Habéis tocado mucho? ¿Por dónde? ¿Cómo son vuestros conciertos? ¿Hacéis versiones?
Hemos tocado una vez, en un sitio llamado ‘Hulen’, en Bergen. El concierto fue bastante sencillo, pero basándonos en lo que la gente nos comentó, estuvo bien, así que estamos contentos. La primera canción de nuestro concierto era una versión del «Lazy thunderstorms» de BLUEBOY. Estamos definitivamente buscando tocar más, a ver si hay suerte y tocamos algún día en España…
9. ¿Preferís el directo o el estudio?
Ambos. Pero hemos de admitir debido a nuestra formación que se nos da mejor sonar en estudio que en directo, ya que en estudio podemos ganar en una mayor complejidad en las canciones.
10. ¿Cómo describiríais vuestra música para alguien que nunca os haya oído?
Nuestras canciones son muy pop. Intentamos hacer el tipo de canciones que nos gustan, y si hay suerte, que éstas gusten también a alguien más. Y esto se basa sobre todo en nuestras influencias.
11. ¿Y cómo es un día normal en vuestras vidas?
Todos estudiamos. Eirik y Kristopher estudian Políticas y Filosofía, y Kjetil estudia Literatura.
12. ¿Cuáles son vuestras aficiones?
Música y fútbol. Somos todos de diferentes zonas de Bergen, y nos conocimos animando a nuestro equipo de fútbol favorito, Brann. Y luego descubrimos que nos gustaba mucho la misma música.

14. ¿Hay más grupos de pop en Bergen? ¿Cuáles nos recomendáis?
Sí! hay más grupos de pop en Bergen. Grupos que nos gustan están: KINGS OF
CONVENIENCE (que probablemente conoceréis), y nuestro amigo y favorito PROFESSOR PEZ, que ha editado un álbum en Galant Records. Galant Records es también el epicentro de una futura escena aquí en Bergen, conectando a distintos grupos indies.
15. ¿Se puede hablar de una escena pop en Noruega? ¿hay muchos sellos de pop? ¿cuáles son vuestros grupos noruegos favoritos?
Parte está contestado en la pregunta 14. También podemos mencionar el sello Perfect Pop en Oslo, con THE LOCH NESS MOUSE como nuestra banda favorita del sello.
16. ¿Conocéis sellos o grupos españoles? ¿Cuáles? ¿Os gustan?
Sí, sí que conocemos, sobre todo Eirik, que ha desarrollado una especial relación con la escena indie española, que empezó con los sellos Siesta, Elefant, Jabalina, Acuarela,… y termina con nuestros nuevos favoritos Annika. Nuestros grupos españoles favoritos son: FAMILY, MIRAFIORI, NIZA, LA CASA AZUL / MILKYWAY, ME ENVENENO DE AZULES, etc… y por supuesto nuestros queridos VACACIONES.
17. ¿Qué música soléis escuchar? ¿Cuáles son vuestros grupos favoritos?
Kristopher: Aparte de los grupos mencionados en las influencias de la pregunta 4, también escucho mucho Northern Soul, y algo de Hip Hop / R’n’B. Si tuviera que quedarme con un grupo favorito de la historia, éstos serían probablemente THE SMITHS, pero también están muy cerca McCARTHY, RED HOUSE PAINTERS y BLUEBOY.
Eirik: (mira la pregunta 4) Escucho sobre todo música pop, de todos los estilos:
neo-acoustic, sunshine pop, c86, bossa, etc. Siguiendo el ejemplo de Kristopher´s podría nombrar como mis dos grupos favoritos de la historia a McCARTHY y BLUEBOY.
18. ¿Cuáles son vuestros planes con LOVE DANCE para los próximos meses?
Ensayar, escribir canciones y grabar.

“Shortly about the band: The band´s name is TRY HAPPINESS. It consists of my dearest friend Kristopher and I. Kristopher: vocal, guitar, bass. Me: guitars, drums, vocal. We’re making songs at my bedroom. We’ve been in contact with Oliver from Marsh Marigold, who wants to release a 7″ and a album with the band. That´s about it. We’ve just started making music you see. “You should know where I’m standing” is our first recorded song. Hopefully we’ll do several more songs within a short periode.”
1. Who are LOVE DANCE? Where are you from? Who plays each instrument? and how old is the band? when was it born?
The members of LOVE DANCE are Eirik, 22 (lead guitar, drum machine), Kristopher, 25 (guitar, vocals) who started the band in late 2003 after talking about it for 2 years

2. Why the name of LOVE DANCE for the band? Before you had a different name, TRY HAPPINESS, why did you change it?
Because we tried happiness and it didn’t work for us… No, seriously, we wanted a name that didn’t take the focus away from the music, and a name that didn’t give associations to other bands or a certain genre. And to be honest, we like it better.
3. Who writes the songs? Which things make you write those beautiful songs? What are the lyrics about?
The songs are made through an interaction between Eirik and Kristopher who has clear visions of what they want the band to sound like. The songs come about as a result of all the references our lives are based on, from literature to music to football to love. One can say that some of the lyrics are relationship related.
4. Which bands influence the sound of LOVE DANCE?
Here it’s important to draw a distinction between the bands we like and the bands that directly influence our sound. Refering to the sound of LOVE DANCE a suitable description will be the sound of the bands who are associated with post-punk/new wave/indiepop-era, and the bands who are inspired by these bands on a later stage.
5. How many songs have you written? how many ones have you recorded?
We have written about 9-10 songs, and are always in the process of recording songs. 4 songs have been demoed so far.
6. It seems you are going to record an ep and an album with the german label Marsh Marigold. How was the romance?
The plan is first of all to release a 7″ ep on Marsh Marigold, and that’s what we’re concentrating on now. We got in contact with the label as record collectors, buying some of their releases. We have always looked upon Marsh Marigold as sort of a Continental European forerunner in promoting the sounds we like. Also some of our favoruite bands are on the label.
7. When will the ep come out? Which songs will it have? And the album?
We don’t have an exact date, but hopefully within the end of this year. We are working on four songs for this ep, and they are: “Stay handsome!”, “What does this tell you?”, “You should know where I’m standing” (of course not the demo version which appears on the cd-r for this fanzine, but a new and improved version!!) & “A month of sundays”.
8. Have you played any gig? Where? How are your gigs? Any cover?
We’ve played one gig at a place called Hulen in Bergen. The concert was quite straightforeward, but based on what people have told us, it was good, so we’re happy. Actually the first song in our set was a cover version of BLUEBOYS «Lazy Thunderstorms». We’re definitely looking foreward to play more, hopefully one day in Spain…
9. Do you prefer gigs or the studio?
Both things are great as long as it turns out great. But we must admit due to our line up, that it’s easier to get the sound right in the studio where we can increase the complexity of the songs.
10. How would you describe your sound to someone who has not ever heard your music?
Our songs are pretty much pop. It’s us trying to make songs we like and hopefully other people like. And this is of course based on our influences. The wheel has already been made up, and we’re just trying to use it in the best way possible.
11. As almost no-one lives on music nowadays, what do you usually do in a normal day?
We are all students. Eirik and Kristopher study Comparative Politics and Philosophy, Kjetil studies Literature.
12. Which are your hobbies?
Our hobbies are music and football, particulary terrace culture. We are all from different parts of Bergen, and we met in the stands supporting our favourite team Brann. And after a while we found out that we liked much of the same music.

14. Are there more pop bands in Bergen? Which ones do you suggest us? Is there a pop scene in Bergen?
Yes! there are more pop bands in Bergen. To bands we like: KINGS OF CONVENIENCE (which you probably already have heard about), and our friends and favourites in PROFESSOR PEZ, who has just released an album on Galant Records. Galant Records is also the center of an up and coming pop scene here Bergen, connecting bands from different indiegenres.
15. Is there a pop scene in Norway? are there any pop labels in Norway? and which are your favourite norwegian bands?
See question 14. We can also mention Perfect Pop in Oslo, with THE LOCH NESS MOUSE being our favourite band on that label.
16. Do you know any labels or bands from Spain? Which ones? Do you like them?
Yes we do, especially Eirik who has through time developed a special relationship with the spanish indie scene. It started with Siesta, through Elefant, through Jabalina, through Acuarela and ended up with our new favourites Annika. Our favourite spanish bands are: FAMILY, MIRAFIORI, NIZA, LA CASA AZUL / MILKYWAY, ME ENVENENO DE AZULES, etc… and of course the beloved VACACIONES.
17. What music do you usually listen to? which are you favourite bands?
Kristopher: As well as different bands from the genres mentioned under influences (question 4), I also listen to Northern Soul a lot, and some Hip Hop / R’n’B. If I were to mention a favourite band of all time it would probably be THE SMITHS, but McCARTHY, RED HOUSE PAINTERS and BLUEBOY are also up there.
Eirik: (see also question 4) I’m mostly listening to pop music, widespread through different genres of pop; neo-acoustic, sunshine pop, c86, bossa etc. Following Kristopher´s example I can mention two bands of particular importance: McCARTHY and BLUEBOY.
18. Which are your plans with LOVE DANCE for the next months?
Rehearsing, writing songs and recording.
