YOUNG GALAXY no es un grupo que haya aparecido de la nada. Surge de gases comunes y excepcionales, del polvo que fluye y se mezcla e impacta, surge de ingredientes elementales que ellos mismos purifican, a la vez que se mezclan con cada uno de los objetos del universo; están hechos de ellos. Su música puede describirse de la misma manera y definirse como el choque de sus influencias y no como las influencias en sí mismas. De todo ello surgen sonidos nuevos, vitalistas, sorprendentes, familiares…en una palabra, eternos.
Stephen Ramsay y Catherine McCandless son YOUNG GALAXY, quiénes continúan con la tradición de sus raíces isleñas de la frontera oeste de Canadá, un lugar nebuloso, de mareas crecientes y hogueras en la playa. A pesar de esto, YOUNG GALAXY no son el tipo de grupo que plasma los fuertes vientos de las islas o los lamentos del okanogan; poseen otra faceta moderna y mundana, que mezcla la cadencia de los sonidos urbanos como consecuencia de los fértiles años que han pasado fusionándose con la cosmopolita Montreal.
YOUNG GALAXY es una entidad musical con un corazón cubierto de hojas cuyos pies siguen el latido y el ritmo de los escaparates y las luces de neón que iluminan la ciudad. Están formados tal y como lo hacen las jóvenes galaxias, de contradicciones, de trozos de nada que componen todas las cosas, tal y como su sonado debut refleja.
Canción tras canción, escuchamos huellas de elementos familiares envueltos en formas que nunca hubiéramos imaginado, que no habían sido unidos en un millón de años y que nos conquistan incluso antes de que sepamos que nos han conquistado. Para cada elemento esencial, este álbum nos muestra otro que lo verifica y al que le presta tributo con la conquista de oscuras guitarras y armonías florales que se mezclan con cautivadores sonidos shoegazer que se convierten en un himno pastoral.
YOUNG GALAXY es un impresionante punto de partida para un grupo que está empezando a ascender; llámalo una chispa en el aire comprimido de una ciudad bajo cero o el fruto del amor al hacer música o el hacer música con aquellos a los que quieres. Grabado con Jace Lasek (THE BESNARD LAKES) en su estudio Breakglass durante el verano de 2005 y la primavera de 2006, y con la ayuda y colaboración de otros amigos, YOUNG GALAXY ha surgido de algo concreto que partía de algo abstracto y efímero; YOUNG GALAXY es esto.
Aquí las influencias se mezclan y dan a luz nuevos sonidos: himnos familiares, misteriosamente ambiguos, osmóticos o futuros, eternos y totalmente nuevos. YOUNG GALAXY mejora la micro-restauración del pop. De algún modo, han encontrado la forma de devolver a la música su sensibilidad antes de que el rock se transformara en cientos de diferentes compromisos estéticos. YOUNG GALAXY ha aterrizado en la más rara de las alquimias musicales y ha hecho de ella un clásico instantáneo del pop.
La NASA utilizó este titular con gran acierto: «Las jóvenes galaxias rodeadas de materia necesitan crear estrellas».

1. ¿Podrías presentaros y contarnos brevemente la historia de YOUNG GALAXY?
Hola, soy Stephen Ramsay, toco la guitarra y canto en un grupo llamado YOUNG GALAXY y soy de Montreal, Canada. El grupo se formó en 2005, y originalmente la banda estaba compuesta por mi novia, Catherine McCandless y por mí; aunque ahora somos 4 miembros permanentes: Stephen Kamp, Max Henry, mi novia y yo. YOUNG GALAXY se formó en Vancouver, Canada, para después mudarnos a Montreal en donde también tocaba en un grupo llamado STARS. Hicimos nuestro primer disco durante 2005/2006 en los estudios Breakglass con Jace Lasek de THE BESNARD LAKES, aprovechando cuando volvía a casa de mis giras con STARS. Finalmente fichamos por Arts&Crafts Records de Toronto, quiénes sacaron nuestro álbum de debut en abril de 2007… ¡y el resto ya es historia!.
2. ¿YOUNG GALAXY sois solamente Stephen y Catherine u os acompaña un grupo para grabar y tocar en directo? ¿Puedes presentarnos al grupo y decirnos qué instrumentos toca cada uno?
Somos un grupo, en el que Catherine canta y toca los teclados, yo canto y toco la guitarra, Stephen Kamp toca el bajo y Max Henry toca la batería, guitarras y teclado.
3. ¿Qué influencias musicales se reúnen en vuestra galaxia?
Nos gusta todo tipo de música; yo era un gran fan de la música indie británica de los 80, pero también del hip-hop, del krautrock, de la música dance, de la psicodelia y de la música extranjera. Enamorarse de un grupo te hace abrir puertas cerradas a otros grupos fantásticos que estaban antes que ellos. Nosotros sentimos que toda la música nos inspira, asumiendo que está hecha con pasión y con un amor genuino a la forma artística.
4. ¿De dónde sacáis la inspiración para escribir esos maravillosos temas? ¿De qué van vuestras canciones?
Para el primer álbum, nos inspiramos en situaciones de la vida real, la mayoría de las letras se basan en experiencias propias. Las canciones frecuentemente van sobre la constancia en los tiempos difíciles; la vida es imperfecta, así que ¿cómo solucionas las cosas para continuar?
5. ¿Cómo fue el romance con Arts & Crafts para que os sacaran vuestro álbum de debut?
Pues con cenas, con velas y mucho vino! Jajaja. Conocíamos el sello de mi época con STARS, así que fue un cortejo fácil. Manteníamos mucho contacto con ellos mientras estábamos grabando el disco.
6. ¿Por qué dejaste STARS?
Sabían que yo tenía mi propio proyecto, así que estaba claro desde el principio que esa sería mi prioridad. Son 5 personas con mucha creatividad en el grupo, así que añadir otro más hubiera sido imposible. Me apoyaron muchísimo y seguimos siendo muy buenos amigos.
7. ¿Existe una escena musical emergente en Montreal?
¿No ha emergido todavía? Jeje. Sí, sí que la hay, y básicamente porque es una ciudad muy barata comparada con otras; además, existe una buena comunidad artística, en la que todo el mundo se conoce, lo que en mi opinión conduce a una escena muy sana.
8. ¿Cuál es vuestra opinión sobre los siguientes grupos/artistas de Montreal?

9. ¿Vendríais a tocar a España? ¿Habéis estado alguna vez en España actuando o de vacaciones?
¡Me encantaría tocar en España todas las semanas! es uno de mis países favoritos. He tocado unas cuantas veces en Madrid y Barcelona, y también estuve allí durante unas navidades hace como diez años. Viviría en España si pudiera… ¡y me encanta el pollo asado del Museo del Jamón de Madrid!
10. ¿Preferís tocar en directo o grabar en el estudio?
Son cosas completamente diferentes; me encanta la expresividad del directo y la experimentación del estudio. Pienso que uno le cuenta cosas al otro para nuestro siguiente álbum, ya que tomamos muchas decisiones en el estudio basadas en canciones que hemos tocado en directo de nuestro primer trabajo. Es un proceso de refinamiento de los dos entornos para lograr un increíble resultado.
11. ¿Qué tal fue la experiencia de grabar vuestro álbum con Jace Lasek (BESNARD LAKES)?
Jace es como mi hermano, y como un 5º miembro no oficial del grupo. Siempre se involucra mucho en nuestras grabaciones y es un hombre enormemente inspirador y muy trabajador ¡adoro a ese tío!
12. Puesto que casi nadie vive de la música hoy por hoy… ¿Cómo es un día normal en vuestra vida?
Jajaja, ¡qué gran verdad!, pero aquí en Montreal no necesitas mucho para vivir. Soy un afortunado al no haber hecho nunca nada que no fuera música mientras he vivido aquí. Hice la carrera de Literatura Inglesa en la Universidad y Catherine es una profesora experimentada, pero trabajamos a jornada completa en la música gracias al poco dinero que conseguimos con el grupo…
13. ¿Podéis nombrarnos vuestro grupo favorito de cada década?
Favorito de los 50: Creo que Joe Meek… ¡estaba como una cabra!
Favorito de los 60: ¡Hay demasiados buenos! No me parece justo, así que tendré que decir alguno al azar; recomiendo un grupo canadiense llamado J. K. & CO., que sacó un gran álbum psicodélico en 1968, ‘Suddenly one summer’.
Favorito de los 70: ¡esto es incluso más injusto aún! ¡la mejor década de la música! me encantan DAVID BOWIE y FLEETWOOD MAC, pero estos serían sólo el aperitivo…
Favorito de los 80: ¡Estás acabando conmigo! Jajaja. El debut de THE STONE ROSES es posiblemente mi disco favorito de todos los tiempos, pero una vez más, ¡la década de los 80 también fue increíble! ¿NEW ORDER? ¿THE SMITHS? ¿THE CURE?… fue el nacimiento de la música indie tal y como la conocemos ahora…
Favorito de los 90: el ‘A northern soul’ de THE VERVE todavía me parace alucinante. ¿MASSIVE ATTACK? ¿PORTISHEAD? El ‘Soft bulletin’ de THE FLAMING LIPS?

15. ¿Tenéis planes de sacar nuevo álbum?
¡Acabamos de terminarlo! ahora estamos buscando un productor, pero la grabación está terminada. Tenemos 14 canciones y estamos muy emocionados ya que hemos notado una gran progresión, es mucho más perfecto; es como si los HAPPY MONDAYS se encontraran con los SOUND OF MUSIC, pero a mitad de camino… ¡jaja!
16. ¿Cuál es vuestra opinión sobre el futuro de los formatos musicales? ¿Qué formato prensáis que predominará en el futuro (CD, vinilo, mp3, disco duro…)? ¿Cuál vuestro tu formato favorito?
El vinilo siempre sera mi favorito, la integridad y la profundidad de una grabación en vinilo no se puede comparar con nada, además que el formato es muy chulo. Los Mp3s lo han conquistado todo, ya nadie compra música y no los culpo, se pagaba demasiado por ella, y honestamente, deberíamos escuchar la música antes de comprarla. Cuando yo era un crío pedí un cd de importación a Inglaterra que me costó 35 dólares, era un recopilatorio de caras-b de un grupillo que ni siquiera había escuchado, y cuando lo hice, me di cuenta de que no lo quería. Por suerte, ahora puedes buscar en google a cualquier grupo que te apetezca y escuchar su música, es una forma estupenda para encontrar lo que quieres. Por desgracia, y como resultado de todo esto yo soy bastante pobre… ¡si todo el que se descargara mi álbum me enviara un dólar, podría pagar mi alquiler!
17. He escogido «Swing your heartache» para el CD recopilatorio «Neptuno», que viene con este número #10 de mi fanzine. ¿Qué me puedes contar sobre esta canción?
Pues es una canción muy importante para Catherine y para mí ya que es como un tipo de manifiesto para nosotros. Habíamos pasado por cosas muy duras cuando la escribimos, como problemas de salud, rupturas… es como una canción que reafirma la vida, no importa lo duras que se pongan las cosas porque sobreviviremos, porque estaremos bien. La canción simplemente nació de nosotros cuando nos pusimos a escribirla y estamos muy orgullosos de ella.
18. ¿Cuáles son vuestros planes futuros?
Tenemos planeado lanzar nuestro nuevo álbum para principios de 2009, y con un poco de suerte un ep previo. Esperamos que tengáis muchas noticias sobre nosotros en el 2009.

Young galaxies don’t just appear. They are born of gases common and rare, of dusts that swirl and mix and super-collide, of ingredients so elemental that they season every object in the universe – are of every object in the universe.
Music can be that way too. Music can be defined by the collision of its influences and not by the influences themselves. And from that surge, new and vital sounds can emerge, surprising ones, at once familiar and, in a word, timeless.
Stephen Ramsay and Catherine McCandless are Young Galaxy. They stem from island roots, from Canada’s Western frontier, that place of rising tides, beach side campfires and fogged-in cedars. But Young Galaxy isn’t the stuff of island gales and Okanogan laments. There’s another facet, a cool urbaneness, the measured cadence of a city strut. Years spent in the fertile cosmopolitanism of Montreal have made their mark.
If Young Galaxy is a musical entity with its heart buried in leaves, its feet follow the striding beat and rhythmic pulses of the mirrored-glass and neon-lit city. And just as young galaxies are born of contradictions – bits of nothing made everything – so is their eponymous debut.
Song after song, we hear traces of the familiar retooled and delivered in ways we’d never have guessed at, never have conjured in a million years. They win us before we know that we’ve been won. For every defining element, the album has another to check and compliment it – brooding guitar licks and floral harmonies collide with rapt shoe-gazer choruses that transcend to an anthemic pastoral.
Young Galaxy, is an impressive entry point for a group at the beginning of their ascent. Call it a spark in the dry air of a sub-zero city or the child of a love of making music and of making music with the ones they love. Recorded with Jace Lasek (Besnard Lakes) at his Breakglass Studio in the summer of 2005 and spring of 2006, and featuring appearances and performances by other dear friends, Young Galaxy has borne something concrete of something abstract and ephemeral. Young Galaxy is it.
Here, influences collide and birth new sounds, anthemically familiar, intriguingly obscure, osmotic or intended, ageless and utterly new. Young Galaxy transcends the micro-genreification of pop. Somehow, they have found a way back to a musical sensibility before rock was shattered into a thousand different aesthetic compromises. Young Galaxy have landed on the rarest musical alchemy and made of it an instant pop classic.

1. Can you introduce yourself and tell us a brief history of YOUNG GALAXY?
Hello I’m Stephen Ramsay. I play guitar and sing in a band called Young Galaxy from Montreal, Canada. We formed in 2005 – originally the band was comprised of me and my girlfriend, Catherine McCandless. We now have 4 permanent members, which include Stephen Kamp and Max Henry as well as Catherine and myself. We formed in Vancouver, Canada originally and moved to Montreal where I also played in a band called Stars. We made our first record over 2005/2006 at Breakglass studios with Jace Lasek of the Besnard Lakes whenever I was at home from touring with Stars, and eventually signed to Arts&Crafts records in Toronto, who released our debut album in April 2007.. the rest is history!
2. Is YOUNG GALAXY only Stephen and Catherine or are you accompanied by a real full band to record or to play shows? can you introduce the band and which instrument play each one?
We are a full band – Catherine sings and plays keys, I sing and play guitar, Stephen Kamp plays bass and Max Henry plays drums, guitars and keys.
3. What musical influences collide in your young galaxy?
We love all kinds of music – I was a huge fan of British 80’s indie music growing up, as well as hip-hop, krautrock, dance music, psychedelia, and outsider music. When you fall in love with a band it usually opens so many trapdoors to other amazing bands that came before them. We feel like all music inspires us, assuming it is made with passion and a genuine love of the artform.
4. Where do you find the inspiration to write those beautiful songs? what are the lyrics about?
For the first record, we got a lot of inspiration from real life situations – most of the first record’s lyrical content was based on first hand experience. The lyrics are often about perseverance in the face of difficult times – life is imperfect, so how do you deal with that and move on?
5. How was the romance with Arts & Crafts to release your debut album?
Lots of wine and candlelight dinners, haha! We knew the label from my time with Stars, so it was an easy courtship. We had lots of contact with them while we were making the record.
6. Stephen, why did you leave STARS?
They knew I had my own project, so it was clear from the beginning that it would be a priority. They have 5 people with equal creative stake in the band, so to add another would have been impossible – they were extremely supportive and remain great friends!
7. Is there an emerging musical scene in Montreal?
Hasn’t it already emerged? Haha! Yes there is – mostly because it is a very inexpensive city to live in by the world’s standards, and it is a very tight knit artistic community. Everyone knows each other and supports each other, which lends itself to a very healthy scene I think.
8. Can you tell us your opinion about the following bands/artists from Montreal?

9. What about coming to play to Spain? Have you ever been to Spain playing or on holiday?
I would like to play in Spain every week! It’s one of my favourite countries – I have played there a few times with Stars in Madrid and Barcelona, and also spent time there over Christmas 10 years ago. I would live in Spain if I could.. and I love the pollo asado from the Museo De Jambon in Madrid!
10. Do you prefer to play live or recording in the studio?
Different things entirely – I love the expressiveness of playing live and the experimentation of the studio. I think one informs the other – for our next record, we made a lot of decisions in the studio based on playing songs from the first album live. We didn’t have the luxury of that before we made the first record. It is a process of refining the two environments into one amazing package…
11. How was the experience of recording your album with Jace Lasek (BESNARD LAKES)?
Jace is like my brother, and unofficial 5th member of the band really. He is always heavily involved in our recordings – he is an extremely inspiring and hard working man. I love that guy!
12. As almost no-one lives on music nowadays, what do you do in a normal day?
Haha that’s true! But here in Montreal, you don’t need a lot to get by. I am lucky to never have done anything but make music while living here! I did a university degree in English literature, and Catherine is a trained teacher, but we concentrate full time on music with the small amount of money that trickles in from the band…
13. Can you name your favourite band/s or artist/sfrom each decade?
Favourite of the 50s: Joe Meek maybe? He was insane.
Favourite of the 60s: Sooo many great ones! Not a fair question, so I’m going to have to just randomly recommend a Canadian band called J.K.&Co. who released a great psychedelic album «Suddenly One Summer» in 1968.
Favourite of the 70s: That’s even more unfair! The greatest musical decade ever! I love David Bowie and Fleetwood Mac so much, let’s go with them for starters.
Favourite of the 80s: You’re killing me! Haha! The Stone Roses debut is maybe my favourite album ever. But again, the 80’s are mind blowing… New Order? The Smiths? The Cure? It was the birth of Indie music as we know it!
Favourite of the 90s: The Verve’s «A Northern Soul» still blows my mind. Massive Attack? Portishead? The Flaming Lip’s «Soft Bulletin»??
Favourite of the 00s: My record! Haha! I LOVE the Swedish band Studio’s debut, «Yearbook 1» – it came out of nowhere…
14. Dream-pop or psychedelia?

15. Any plans of a new album?
We actually just finished making it! We still are looking for a mixer, but the tracking is completed. We’ve got 14 new songs. We are very excited because it feels like a great progression for us, a lot more accomplished. Think Happy Mondays meets the Sound Of Music and you are halfway there… haha!
16. What’s your opinion about the future of music formats? Which format do you think it will settle down in the future (cd, vinyl, mp3, hard disk,…)? and which is your favourite one?
Vinyl will always be my favourite – the integrity and depth of the vinyl recording is second to none. Plus, the artwork and packaging is so cool. Mp3’s have taken over, haven’t they? No one buys music anymore. I don’t blame them – it was overpriced and frankly you should be able to at least listen to music before you buy it. When I was a kid I’d order 35 dollar import cd’s from England of some shit band’s b-sides collection before I’d be able to hear it and find out I didn’t want it. Now, you can just google any band you may hear of and find their music online. That’s a great way to find out what you like. It just means I’m poor as a result. If everyone who downloaded my album sent me a dollar I’d be able to pay my rent!
17. I have chosen “Swing your heartache” for the ‘Neptuno’ compilation CD that comes with this issue #10 of my fanzine. What can you tell us about this song?
This was a very important song for Catherine and me, becuase it felt like a manifesto of sorts. We had been through some very trying times in our life when we wrote it – health problems, break-ups, etc. It felt like a life affirming song when it was done – that no matter how hard things got, we would survive. We would be ok. The song just poured out of us when we wrote it – we are very proud of it!
18. Which are your plans and expectations for 2008?
We are preparing to release a new album for early 2009, and hopefully an EP sometime before the end of this year. Like I said it’s already tracked, so we will spend the coming months putting the finishing touches on it. Hopefully you will be hearing a lot from us in the coming year!
