THE SCHOOL es un adorable nuevo grupo de pop procedente de Gales, en el Reino Unido.
Lo forman 8 personas, lideradas por Liz, del magnífico grupo de bubblegum pop psicodélico THE LOVES. Ella lleva la voz principal y toca los teclados, y a su alrededor están Rosie (guitarra acústica y coros), Steph (violín), Josh (batería), Ryan (bajo), Ceri (guitarra eléctrica y coros) y Filmryan (glockenspiel y percusión).
Combinando el gusto por el indie pop y la música más brillante de los años 60, el estilo de THE SCHOOL es una versión británica del sunshine pop que combina luces y sombras, el pop contagioso e hipermelódico que se puede bailar llorando. Canciones sofisticadas y alegres con un punto de melancolía, que se inspiran en THE BEACH BOYS (y en las fantásticas AMERICAN SPRING, producidas por Brian Wilson), en THE BEATLES, en Phil Spector y en los grupos de chicas de los 60. Sin olvidar, por supuesto, a otros grupos más actuales con quienes comparten referencias, y que también envuelven sus dulces melodías con arreglos de cuerda y teclados maravillosos, como BELLE & SEBASTIAN, SATURDAY LOOKS GOOD TO ME, CAMERA OBSCURA, Jim Noir, LUCKY SOUL, THE BRUNETTES o LITTLE MY.

Sólo llevaban cuatro conciertos en su haber cuando ficharon por Elefant a principios del verano de 2007. Desde entonces su experiencia en directo ha ido en aumento, claro: en octubre y noviembre de 2007 el grupo giró por todo el Reino Unido junto con THE LOVES, pateando escenarios de toda Gran Bretaña desde Escocia hasta el sur de Inglaterra, pasando por supuesto por Londres, donde han actuado varias veces y donde cuentan con un buen número de seguidores. También han dejado su huella en España recientemente, donde les pudimos ver en el Festival Murcia Sound.

Hasta el momento han grabado dos singles en vinilo 7”, que deben suponer el aperitivo para su álbum de debut.

1. ¿Podríais empezar contándonos cosas sobre el grupo? ¿Quiénes sois THE SCHOOL? Presentaos…
THE SCHOOL somos un grupo de Cardiff (Gales) y estamos en activo desde hace más o menos un año. Hemos tenido diferentes miembros dentro del grupo mientras tratábamos de encontrar un batería y mejorar nuestras actuaciones en directo, y ahora ya tenemos una formación fija con Liz como vocalista principal y teclista; Ryan, al bajo; Josh, a la batería; Ceri, guitarra eléctrica y coros; Harri, guitarra acústica, glockenspiel, coros y percusión; y Steph al violín.

2. ¿Quién escribe las canciones? ¿De dónde sacáis la inspiración para escribir esos maravillosos temas?
Yo (Liz) escribo todas las canciones. Los temas intentan hacerte bailar pero también llorar a la misma vez, de ese modo pueden sonar animadas pero las letras pueden ser algunas veces muy tristes.

3. ¿Sobre qué van vuestras letras?
Las letras van sobre la luz del sol, los chicos y chicas, el maquillaje, las rupturas… ah! y sobre bailar también, esto es básicamente de lo que hablamos.

4. ¿Qué grupos influencian el sonido de THE SCHOOL?
Cualquier cosa de Phil Spector, y también THE BEACH BOYS, THE BEATLES,
THE SHANGRI-LAS, LUCKY SOUL, CAMERA OBSCURA, THE AISLERS SET y BELLE & SEBASTIAN.

5. ¿Cómo os pusisteis en contacto con Elefant Records? ¿Cómo comenzó el romance entre Elefant y THE SCHOOL?
Fue un rápido romance y del mejor tipo posible. Grabé una demo con la ayuda de Simon de THE LOVES y de nuestro primer batería Rob, de THE VOLUNTARY BUTLER SCHEME, y la enviamos a un montón de sellos. Siempre tuve la ambición de fichar por Elefant pero pensaba que primero tendríamos que lanzar algún single antes de que incluso nos escuchasen. Pero increíblemente, nos escribieron preguntándonos si queríamos publicar 2 álbumes con ellos… ¡y no nos lo podíamos creer!

6. ¿Qué otros grupos de Elefant tenéis como vuestros favoritos?
Pues CAMERA OBSCURA, LUCKY SOUL, LA CASA AZUL, SPEEDMARKET AVENUE, THE CARROTS, COLA JET SET, HELEN LOVE, JUNIPER MOON, COOPER, TREMBLING BLUE STARS, THE FRANK AND WALTERS… ¡son todos fantásticos! En general, me encantan todos los grupos que han estado con ellos a lo largo de los años, ya que siempre han publicado el mejor indiepop del mundo.

7. Liz, también tocas en los fantásticos THE LOVES, ¿alguna noticia sobre ellos? ¿Seguís en activo o planeáis hacer alguna gira? ¿THE SCHOOL enterró a THE LOVES? Nunca llegásteis a venir a España (aunque tal vez esté equivocado)…
Tuve que dejar THE LOVES ya que THE SCHOOL estaba cada vez más solicitado y lo de THE LOVES se había relajado un poco; y sí, estás en lo cierto, sólo salieron del Reino Unido una vez, y fue para tocar en el CMJ en Nueva York. No hay nada que los detenga para tocar en Europa, es solamente que nadie se lo ha pedido aún, si alguien se lo propone, aceptarán el trato de inmediato. Ahora están terminando su tercer álbum y con un poco de suerte, harán una gira por todas partes.

8. ¿Alguno de vosotros (aparte de Liz) toca o ha tocado en algún otro grupo?
Harri tiene un grupo llamado LITTLE MY, que está formado por miembros de otras bandas de Cardiff, como por ejemplo SILENCE AT SEA, que tocan a veces una especie de twee indiepop… y son uno de mis grupos favoritos de todos los tiempos. Ceri también escribe su propia música y es productor, sus canciones son preciosas.

9. ¿Cómo es vuestra relación con otros grupos de Gales? ¿Qué grupo encontráis más cercano a vosotros? ¿Cuáles son vuestros favoritos?
La relación es bastante buena, alguno de nosotros también somos promotores en Cardiff y de ese modo estamos en contacto con otras bandas de Gales, frecuentemente con grupos y en largas giras, donde tratamos de vender su música en las actuaciones tanto como nos es posible.
En este momento, hay una escena musical local muy destacable, principalmente debida al éxito de bandas como LOS CAMPESINOS! Actualmente, nos encantan grupos prometedores de Gales como SWEET BABOO, THE NEW TEA PARTY, SILENCE AT SEA, LITTLE MY, THE ASH AND THE OAK, ZISSOU, THE SPENCER McGARRY SEASON, GINDRINKER y THREATMANTICS.

10. ¿Cuál es vuestra opinión sobre las siguientes bandas galesas?
THE AFTERNOONS: ¡Son adorables! aunque no les he visto en directo en mucho tiempo… así que espero hacerlo pronto ya que están tocando un poco más últimamente.
SUPER FURRY ANIMALS: Los vi muchísimas veces en 1997, así que me tomé un descanso, pero creo que necesito verles otra vez porque son geniales.
GORKY’S ZYGOTIC MYNCI: Son fantásticos, tienen canciones preciosas, también el trabajo en solitario de EUROS CHILD es genial.
THE LOVES: Rock’n’roll! El grupo más infravalorado e incomprendido de todos los tiempos.
VICTORIAN ENGLISH GENTLEMENS CLUB: Son geniales, con un fantástico sonido tipo PIXIES, una chica batería, y todos poniendo a la vez caras de malos, ¡ah! también utilizan una gigantesca campana de colegio en sus actuaciones.
LOS CAMPESINOS!: Una de las mejores bandas que he visto en directo en mi vida, y una de las mejores, más adorables, entusiastas y genuinas que han salido de Gales.
MANIC STREET PREACHERS: Este es otro grupo que vi muchas veces en 1997, y aunque no los he visto en mucho tiempo, han hecho mucho por la música galesa y me encantaría conocerlos. Huw Stephens tocó “All i wanna do” en Radio 1 hace poco y James Dean Bradfield estaba en el estudio con él, dijo que le gustaba mucho y que sonaba como Tracey Ullman, eso me hizo muy feliz.
HELEN LOVE: ¡Sí! Son muy buenos, siempre brillantes y muy bailables; hacen un indiepop genial, también son fantásticos DJ’s, buen artwork y mejor gusto musical ¡además son gente estupenda!
STEREOPHONICS: Bueno… me gustó mucho su primer álbum cuanto tenía 17 años…
11. Habéis tocado hace poco en España, en el Festival Murcia Sound, ¿Cómo fue la experiencia?
¡INCREÍBLE!, nos encanta España. Allí, tuvimos la oportunidad de estar por segunda vez con los chicos de Elefant, conocimos a gente maravillosa y pudimos ver por primera vez en concierto a SPEEDMARKET AVENUE y LA CASA AZUL. Tenemos un gran público en España, por lo que es nuestro lugar favorito para actuar.

12. Ya que casi nadie vive de la música… ¿Cómo es un día normal en vuestra vida?
Yo soy funcionaria, trabajo para la Asamblea Gubernamental de Gales, y administro contenidos web. Ryan y yo dirigimos el Loose, una sala de conciertos en Cardiff, contratamos a bandas estupendas y es muy divertido; también ocasionalmente contratamos algún dj. Todos queremos dejar nuestros trabajos diurnos ¡pero lo antes posible!

13. ¿Y cuáles son vuestras aficiones?
A Ceri, Stef y Josh les encanta cocinar; Harri es veterinario, así que creo que le gustan los animales y la música; a Ryan le encanta ver películas y yo (Liz) no hago mucho más, aunque tengo un gato.

15. ¿Cuál es vuestra opinión sobre el futuro de los formatos musicales? ¿Qué formato pensáis que predominará en el futuro (Cd, vinilo, mp3, disco duro…)?¿Cuál es vuestro favorito?
¡El Vinilo! porque se ve, se huele, se siente, y suena bien. Pienso que el futuro son el mp3 y el vinilo, los CDs son muy vulgares.

16. He escogido «Let it slip» para el CD recopilatorio ‘Neptuno’, que viene con este número #10 de mi fanzine. ¿Qué nos podéis contar sobre esta canción?
¿Sí?, eso es estupendo, gracias! Cuando se escucha por primera vez “Let it slip”, parece simplemente una canción pop bailable, pero si la escuchas con atención es una canción muy triste y llena de paranoias y celos, ¡es perfecta!

17. ¿Cuáles son vuestros planes?
Estoy terminando de escribir nuestro álbum de debut, que saldrá con Elefant a principios de 2009!. También tocaremos en el Latitude Festival en el Reino Unido.

THE SCHOOL is a lovely new pop band hailing from Wales, in the United Kingdom.
Eight young people fronted by charming Liz from the also very charming bubblegum psychedelic popsters THE LOVES. She is the main singer and keyboard player, and surrounding her we find Rosie (acoustic guitar and backing vocals), Steph (violin), Josh (drums), Ryan (bass), Ceri (electric guitar and backing vocals) and Filmryan (glockenspiel and percussion).
Combining such influences as indie-pop and the brightest shimmering 60’s productions, THE SCHOOL’s style is a Brit version of sunshine pop with moments of light and shadow, the kind of infectious, hyper-melodic pop you can simultaneously cry and dance to. Sophisticated, happy songs, with a little melancholy thrown in them, inspired by THE BEACH BOYS (and the fantastic AMERICAN SPRING, produced by Brian Wilson), THE BEATLES, Phil Spector and girl bands from the 60’s. Not forgetting, of course, other current bands with whom they share references and tastes, bands that also wrap their sweet melodies in wonderful keyboard and string arrangements, bands like BELLE & SEBASTIAN, SATURDAY LOOKS GOOD TO ME, CAMERA OBSCURA, Jim Noir, LUCKY SOUL, THE BRUNETTES or LITTLE MY.
It’s more than likely you still have not heard about them, and that’s absolutely understandable: this band is so new, they only had done four live shows when they signed with Elefant Records in the summer of 2007. Since then, their live concert experience has grown, of course: in october they toured all over the UK along with THE LOVES. But before this extensive UK tour, in september the band entered the recording studio with engineer/producer Ian Catt (SAINT ETIENNE, TREMBLING BLUE STARS, NOSOTRÄSH) in order to record the two songs that are included on their debut 7″, «All I wanna do». A limited edition vinyl single which will advance their long-play debut, due in 2008.
THE SCHOOL are doing their homework, and it will take them to achieve the highest levels.

1. Can you begin with a little history of the band? Who are THE SCHOOL? Introduce the band, and who plays each instrument…
The School are from Cardiff, Wales and we’ve been going for just over a year now. We’ve had a few different members in the band while trying to find a drummer and improve our live performances, but have pretty much settled down now to Liz on lead vocals / keyboard, Ryan on bass, Josh on drums, Ceri on electric guitar / backing, Harri on acoustic guitar / glock / backing / percusión and Steph on violin.

2. Who writes the songs? Where do you find the inspiration to write those beautiful songs?
I (Liz) write the songs, they try to make you dance but also cry at the same time, so they may sound upbeat but the lyrics can sometimes be very sad.

3. What are the lyrics about?
The lyrics tend to be about sunshine, boys + girls, make-ups and break-ups..oh and dancing too. That’s pretty much it.

4. Which bands influence the sound of THE SCHOOL?
Anything Phil Spector, along with The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Shangri-Las, Lucky Soul, Camera Obscura, The Aislers Set and Belle & Sebastian.

5. How did you get in touch with Elefant Records? How was the romance between Elefant Records and THE SCHOOL?
It was a whirlwind romance! The best kind.. I made a demo with the help of Simon from The Loves and our first drummer Rob from The Voluntary Butler Scheme, and we sent it to lots of labels. It had always been my ambition to sign to Elefant but I thought we would have to do some small single releases first before they would even get to listen to it. But they wrote back straight away asking us to release 2 albums with them, and we couldn’t believe it!

6. Which other Elefant bands do you like best?
Camera Obscura, Lucky Soul, La Casa Azul, Speedmarket Avenue, The Carrots, Cola Jet Set, Helen Love, Juniper Moon, Cooper, Trembling Blue Stars, The Frank and Walters – they’re all really great! All their bands over the years too, they have always put out the best indiepop in the world!

7. Liz, you also play in the fantastic band THE LOVES, any news about them? are they still playing or any plans to do gigs with THE LOVES?
You never came to Spain (or maybe I’m wrong)!! or does it mean that THE SCHOOL buried THE LOVES? I had to leave The Loves as things were getting too busy with The School and the Loves had gone very quiet.. you’re right they only left the UK once and that was to play CMJ in New York. There’s nothing stopping them from playing Europe, it’s just no-one’s asked them yet. Someone get them into Europe and they’ll go down a treat. They’re finishing their 3rd album at the moment so hopefully will get to tour everywhere.

8. Do any of you (apart from Liz) play also in other bands now? or have you played in other bands in the past?
Harri has a band called Little My, which consists of members of other bands in Cardiff such as Silence at Sea, they play sometimes delicate sometimes shambolic (in a good way) twee indiepop and are one of my favourite bands of all time. Ceri also writes his own music and is also a producer, his songs are lovely.

9. How is your relationship with others bands from Wales? Which bands do you feel closer? Which are your favourite Welsh bands?
Quite good – a couple of us also promote nights in Cardiff so we get to put on other Welsh bands regularly, often with larger touring bands and we also try to sell their music at shows as much as we can. At the moment there’s a really great local music scene, mainly due to the success of acts like Los Campesinos! – currently up & coming bands we love from Wales including Sweet Baboo, The New Tea Party, Silence at Sea, Little My, The Ash and the Oak, Zissou, The Spencer McGarry Season, Gindrinker and Threatmantics.

10. Can you tell us your opinion about the following Welsh bands?
THE AFTERNOONS: Lovely! Haven’t seen them live in years though so look forward to doing so as they’re playing a bit more recently.
SUPER FURRY ANIMALS: I watched these far too many times in 1997 so took a break, but I think I need to see them again as they are so good!
GORKY’S ZYGOTIC MYNCI: Excellent, beautiful songs and also Euros Childs’ solo work is great too.
THE LOVES: Rock’n’roll! The most underrated and misunderstood band of all time.
VICTORIAN ENGLISH GENTLEMENS CLUB: Filth! They’re great, wonderful scuzzy Pixies type sounds with girl drummer and they all pull naughty faces. They use a giant school bell on stage too.
LOS CAMPESINOS!: One of the best live bands I’ve seen in ages and one of the best, nicest, most enthusiastic and genuine bands to have come out of Wales.
MANIC STREET PREACHERS: Another band I saw too many times in 1997, haven’t seen them in years but they’ve done a lot for Welsh music and I would love to meet them some time. Huw Stephens played All I Wanna Do on Radio 1 recently and James Dean Bradfield was in the studio with him, he said he liked it a lot and that it sounded like Tracey Ullman, so I was very happy.
HELEN LOVE: YES! So good. Always brilliant and good to dance to. They are great indiepop DJs too, good artwork + musical taste, lovely people!
STEREOPHONICS: well I liked the first album back when I was 17..

11. You have recently been playing in Spain, in the Murcia Sound Festival, how was the experience?
AMAZING! We love Spain. We got to meet Elefant for the second time, met some absolutely lovely people and got to see Speedmarket Avenue and La Caza Asul for the first time. We have such a great audience in Spain too, it’s our favourite place to play.

12. As almost no-one lives on music nowadays, what do you do in a normal day?
I’m a civil servant, I work for the Welsh Assembly Government, I put content on websites. Me and Ryan also run Loose which is a live music night in Cardiff, we put on amazing bands it’s a lot of fun, and occasionally dj at some very shoddily-run indiepop discos! We all want to give up our day jobs very soon though!

13. …And what are your hobbies?
Ceri, Steph and Josh love to cook, Harri is a vet so I think music and animals are pretty much his thing, Ryan loves films and I don’t really do anything else, I have a cat though.

15. What’s your opinion about the future of music formats? Which format do you think it will settle down in the future (cd, vinyl, mp3, hard disk,…)? and which is your favourite one?
Vinyl! Because it looks, smells, feels and sounds good. I think the future is mp3 and vinyl. CDs are very tacky.

16. I have chosen «Let it slip» for the ‘Neptuno’ compilation CD that comes with this issue #10 of my fanzine. What can you tell us about this song?
Wow that’s great thanks. Let It Slip is at first listen a dancey pop song, but if you listen harder it’s actually a very sad song full of paranoia and jealousy – perfect!

17. Which are your plans and expectations for 2008?
I’m about to finish writing our debut album, which will be released on Elefant at the beginning of 2009. So we’ll be recording that this summer, we’re playing Latitude Festival in the UK, then Let It Slip is released in Ireland so we’ll be going there in September. Then touring again for another single in October, very exciting and busy. Hopefully there’ll be time to record something special for Christmas too!
