Son un grupo londinense formado por Graeme Elston (THE LOVE PARADE, PURE, EVA LUNA, ASTRONAUT), voz, guitarra y principal compositor; Matthew Hawes, voz y guitarra; Brychan Todd, al bajo; y Dave Masterman, a la batería.
Graeme Elston es ya toda una leyenda en el indie-pop de los 90. Inspirado por el C86, NEW ORDER, ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN, etc… y es que junto a Dave Masterman, Neil Meldrum y David Lee, tuvo varios grupos cuando era un adolescente, que desembocaron en la formación de LOVE PARADE. Con esta banda, grabó un par de singles en 1990 para el sello alemán ‘A Turntable Friend’, antes de separarse.
Graeme se traslada a Liverpool y forma un nuevo grupo, y le pone el nombre de PURE. Con este nombre, edita un primer single, “Aspidistra” con Sugarfrost Records en 1991, antes de un cambio forzado de nombre por el de EVA LUNA. Cuando el grupo se desintegra, se editan “Tangle» y «Kick out at the things you hate». Graeme entonces decide continuar en solitario, y el ep «Loverstay» adquiere un sonido más brillante y acústico. Entonces graba una Peel Session, y hace una gira por Japón en 1994. En 1995 se edita el ep «Ghost of you».
EVA LUNA maqueta un nuevo ep, «Pistachio», para editar con Sugarfrost en UK y con Cardinal en Japón, pero sin embargo el ep nunca sale, y Graeme se traslada a Londres.
Alex Eckford (colaborador en el ep “Ghost of you»), Brychan Todd, Dave Masterman y Graeme Elston forman ASTRONAUT a finales de 1996, que han editado hasta la fecha
4 singles y 2 álbumes en Fierce Panda.
Mientras que sigue en activo tocando el bajo con ASTRONAUT, Graeme ha seguido componiendo y grabando su propio material bajo el nombre de SLIPSLIDE. Primero editaron un cd-ep en Matinée llamado «Four day weekend», en Abril de 1991, al que le seguió un single 7” titulado «Sleeptalk / Six strings» en noviembre del mismo año. La banda por esas fechas se consolida con su formación actual, y editan en Julio de 2003 su álbum de debut, «The world can wait», en el sello Matinée, quizás el mejor álbum publicado por el sello.
Así, el grupo está formado por Graeme junto a dos compañeros más que también están en ASTRONAUT, y un cuarto, Matthew Hawes.
SLIPSLIDE hacen melancólicas canciones pop de 3 minutos construídas a base de acústicas de 12 cuerdas, celestiales arpegios de guitarras, teclados, y estribillos encantadores.
Graeme nos contesta a nuestras dudas y curiosidades…
1. ¿Cómo nació SLIPSLIDE?
Desde que se formó ASTRONAUT en 1997, había estado trabajando realmente un montón y no había escrito canciones desde las últimas grabaciones de EVA LUNA en 1995. Casi en el 2000 empecé a escribir de nuevo, pero ASTRONAUT estuvo siempre basado en la música de Alex Eckfords, así que inicialmente fue una salida para estas canciones ‘en solitario’.
2. Parecía entonces ser tu proyecto personal, pero finalmente formaste el grupo con otros 2 compañeros también en ASTRONAUT y con Matthew Hawes, quién también escribe canciones, entonces, ¿SLIPSLIDE se puede considerar un proyecto en solitario o un grupo?
ASTRONAUT habían decidido tomarse un descanso tras el álbum ‘The curse of’ en el 2001, así que yo ‘robé’ al grupo para SLIPSLIDE. Alex estaba cansado de ensayar y tocar en directo, pero todos queríamos seguir. Matthew había estado tocando en directo con ASTRONAUT así que él vino junto con Brychan y Dave. SLIPSLIDE fueron gradualmente evolucionando de un proyecto personal a un grupo ‘real’.
3. ¿Cómo conociste a Matthew Hawes?
Conocía a Matthew desde 1993… nos conocimos en la Universidad de Liverpool. Siempre supe que él era un buen guitarrista y compositor, pero no estaba seguro si podíamos coexistir en un mismo grupo. Pero parece que sí! Somos amigos desde hace un montón de tiempo. A Dave le conozco desde los 11 años, y a Brychan casi al mismo tiempo que Matthew. Cada vez los ensayos se hacen más cortos ya que pasamos más tiempo en el pub antes y después, pero eso es bueno, que seamos un grupo que pase tanto tiempo junto.
4. ¿Cómo describirías tu música a alguien que nunca os haya oído?
Pop discordante de guitarras de 3 minutos. O algo que ‘no te gustaría’.
5. Puesto que casi nadie vive de la música hoy en día, decidme, ¿qué soléis hacer un día normal?
Soy ingeniero de sonido de anuncios de TV y radio; Matthew es investigador de cine; Brychan trabaja en Hacienda; y Dave es director de publicidad de vuelos.
6. ¿Cuál es ese disco emocionante que no paras ahora mismo de escuchar una y otra vez?
Para mí, y aunque no es muy reciente, ‘Yours, mine and ours’ de THE PERNICE BROTHERS. Para Matthew, ‘Computer world’ de KRAFTWERK.
7. ¿Preferís los conciertos o el estudio? ¿Habéis tocado mucho en directo? ¿Os gusta?
Nos gusta tocar en directo pero estamos algo vagos, así que no tocamos mucho. Además, el rollo de tocar en directo para la escena indie pop en el Reino Unido está ahora algo muerto, así que es algo desesperanzador ponerse a tocar. Prefiero estar en el estudio, pero como me paso el día entero trabajando tras una mesa de mezclas, se nos come mucha motivación conseguir terminar un disco.
8. ¿Qué otros grupos de Matinée son los que más os gustan?
THE LIBERTY SHIP, por razones obvias (mi hermano toca ahí), y también toco en el álbum de MELODIE GROUP. Pero siempre encuentro alguna razón por la que me gustan la mayoría de grupos.
9. ¿Cómo es vuestra relación con Matinée?
Jimmy tiene un entusiasmo grande por la música pop. Matinée es verdaderamente un sello motivador. Si no fuera por él, habría sido muy dicífil que ‘The world can wait’ hubiera sido grabado ni publicado.
10. ¿Cómo va a ser vuestro segundo álbum? ¿Escribes tú también la mayoría de las canciones? Tengo que reconocer que mis dos favoritas de vuestro álbum de debut las escribe Matthew. ¿Va a escribir él muchas canciones en este disco? ¿Para cuándo saldrá?
El segundo álbum será un gran refuerzo para el grupo. ‘The world can wait’ fue grabado en la totalidad por mí, ya que hice de productor para todo el disco. Creo que si el resto se involucra más en éste, será más llevadero y fácil todo, aunque estoy muy orgulloso de ‘The world can wait’. Matthew escribirá aproximadamente 4 canciones de un total de 10 (él no es muy prolífico, aunque es la calidad, no la cantidad lo que cuenta). También estaré yo grabándole y produciéndole. Si todo va bien, el álbum saldrá en algún momento del año que viene; como te he dicho antes, somos vagos!

1. How was SLIPSLIDE born?
Since forming ASTRONAUT in 1997 I’d been working really hard and hadn’t written any songs since the last EVA LUNA recordings in 1995. By around 2000 I’d started writing again, but ASTRONAUT was always based around Alex Eckfords music. So initially SLIPSLIDE was an outlet for these ‘solo’ songs.
2. It seemed to be your personal project, but you finally formed the band with 2 fellows also in ASTRONAUT and with Matthew Hawes, who also writes songs, so is SLIPSLIDE a solo project or a group?
ASTRONAUT had decided to take a break after our album ‘The Curse Of’ in 2001 so I just ‘stole’ the group. Alex was tired of rehearsing and playing live, but we all wanted to carry on. Matthew had been playing live with ASTRONAUT so he came across with Brychan and Dave. SLIPSLIDE gradually evolved from a solo thing for me into a ‘real’ group.
3. How did you find Matthew Hawes?
I’ve known Matthew since 1993, we met at University in Liverpool. I’d always known he was a good guitarist and songwriter, but was never sure if we could co-exist in a band. So far it’s going OK! We’ve all been friends for a long time – I’ve known Dave since we were 11 years old, and Brychan almost as long as Matthew. Gradually the rehearsals get shorter as we spend longer in the pub before and afterwards, but it’s good that we’re such a close band.
4. Does it make sense the fact of two bands nearly with the same members, ASTRONAUT and SLIPSLIDE? do you find time for both bands?
These days ASTRONAUT is more Alex’s project, although we’ve never split up. We all may contribute to future ASTRONAUT recordings, but since we don’t rehearse or play live it’s not an issue.
5. How would you describe your sound to someone who has not ever heard your music?
Jangly guitar 3 minute pop. Or sometimes ‘you wouldn’t like it’.
6. As almost no-one lives on music nowadays, what do you usually do in a normal day?
I’m a sound engineer for TV and radio ads; Matthew works as a Film Researcher; Brychan works in Property and Dave is a high-flying advertising Art Director.
7. Which is that amazing record that you are listening to lately and can´t stop listening to it?
For me, although it’s not recent, ‘Yours, mine and ours’ by the PERNICE BROTHERS. Matthew says ‘Computer world’ by KRAFTWERK.
8. Do you prefer gigs or the studio? Have you played live a lot? do you like playing concerts?
We do like playing live but we’re lazy these days so don’t play very often. Also the live scene for indie pop in the UK is almost completely dead, so it becomes a bit disheartening. I prefer being in the studio, but as I spend my working day behind a mixing desk it takes a lot of motivation to get recordings finished.
9. Which other bands from Matinee do you like most?
THE LIBERTY SHIP, for obvious reasons, and I also still play the MELODIE GROUP album. But I find something to like in most of the bands.
10. How is your relationship with Matinee?
Jimmy has such great enthusiasm for pop music. Matinee is a really inspiring label. If it wasn’t for him, there’s no way that ‘The world can wait’ would have been recorded let alone released.
11. How is going to be your second album? Are you also writing the most of the songs? I have to recognise that my 2 favourite songs from your debut album are the written ones by Matthew. Is he writing many songs in the new album? When will be the new album be out?
The second album will be more noticeably a group effort. ‘The world can wait’ was mostly recorded by myself, and I acted as producer for the whole album. I think with greater involvement from everyone it’ll be looser and more varied although I’m very proud of ‘The world can wait’. Matthew will probably have four songs out of the ten – he’s not terribly prolific although it’s quality not quantity that counts… I’ll still be producing and recording as I have to reign in his ‘Bob Dylanisms’! Hopefully the album will come out next year sometime. As I said earlier – we’re lazy!
