‘You are the beat’ supone el fantástico álbum de debut de DREAM DIARY, trío formado en 2009 por Jacob Sloan, Madison Farmer y Alexander Lezzi, residentes en Brooklyn. Indie pop romántico y dulzón, repleto de ensoñadores ambientes jangle haciendo honor a su nombre. Las influencias a las que ellos hacen referencia son THE PASTELS, Phil Spector y THE SMITHS, aunque también nos recuerdan a sus paisanos THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART, pero mucho menos ruidosos y distorsionados, y a THE FIELD MICE y a muchas de las bandas de la mítica discográfica Sarah Records.
Jacob nos contestó a nuestras preguntas amablemente…
1. ¿Qué nos podéis contar del origen de la banda?
Cuando empezamos DREAM DIARY, yo (Jacob) tenía un montón de canciones que había grabado hacía ya dos años, y por suerte, encontré al resto de los miembros del grupo a través de amigos. A todos nos encantan THE SMITHS y el indiepop del C-86, aunque tampoco coincidimos en todo lo que nos gusta.
2. ¿Quién escribe las canciones? ¿Podéis contarnos un poco el proceso desde que hacéis una canción hasta que está lista para que la escuchemos?
Yo escribo las canciones y las llevo al local de ensayo para que las toque el grupo; después cada uno añade su parte.
3. ¿De dónde sacáis la inspiración para escribir los temas?
Suelo pensar en la melodía y en los acordes primero y la tarareo mientras voy de un lado a otro, intento que todo no sea sentarme en casa y escribir, prefiero ir a otros lugares, sitios novelescos o algún banco, donde sea, cosa que por cierto, me resulta mas cómoda en verano; después intento visualizar una escena o un sentimiento, o leer un libro para inspirarme en la letra.
4. ¿Qué grupos influencian el sonido de DREAM DIARY?
Personalmente me encantan THE SMITHS, SAINT ETIENNE, Lloyd Cole, Kirsty MacColl, THE BEACH BOYS, Margo Guryan, ADVENTURES IN STEREO, THE SUPREMES,…
5. ¿Alguno de vosotros toca o ha tocado en algún otro grupo?
¡Sí, todos hemos tocado en otros grupos! Por ejemplo, Madison, que era nuestra guitarrista pero que por desgracia se ha mudado a Memphis, estaba, o está, en COASTING, y yo estoy acompañando a mi amigo Kevin en un grupo llamado THE HAIRS.
6. Ya que casi nadie vive de la música hoy en día ¿a que te dedicas? ¿cuáles son tus aficiones?
Trabajo en una pequeña agencia de publicidad, y en mi tiempo libre me gusta ver películas británicas de los ‘50 y ‘60 y también jugar al Scrabble, la verdad es que soy muy bueno.
7. ¿Existe alguna escena musical en Brooklyn? ¿Cuáles son tus grupos favoritos?
Pues quizá haya varias escenas diferentes en Brooklyn que se superponen como diagramas de Venn. Según las modas que se han dado estos últimos años ha existido una especie de nostalgia hacia Nickelodeon/pizza/90s y muchísimas referencias a la religión/brujería/culto. Mis grupos favoritos locales son: BIG TROUBLES, THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART, ICE CHOIR, SELEBRITIES y grupos de otros sitios como BRILLIANT COLORS, PURO INSTINCT, STRAWBERRY WHIPLASH, SWEATER GIRLS, SEA LIONS…
8. ¿Cómo es vuestra relación con Kanine?
Kanine está dirigido por un matrimonio y sus perros, viven muy cerca de nosotros y son supermajos.
9. He elegido «She has a way» para el CD recopilatorio ‘Plutón’ que viene con este número de mi fanzine. ¿Qué nos puedes contar sobre esta canción?
En «She has a way» copiamos parte de la letra a Lloyd Cole y creo que es una canción de amor bastante suspicaz.
10. ¿Cuáles son vuestros planes para 2012?
Pues he estado encerrado todo el invierno escribiendo nuevas canciones…

1. Can you tell us about the beginnings of the band?
As far as the beginnings of DREAM DIARY, I (Jacob) had a handful of bedroom recordings two years ago and found the other band members through several different friendships. We all had an appreciation for THE SMITHS and c86-ish indie pop, even though other members liked other things as well.
2. Who writes the songs? Can you describe the process since the song is created and until it is recorded and ready to listen?
I write the songs and then bring them in for the band to play through them in the basement, and everyone creates their own parts.
3. Where do you find the inspiration to write the songs?
I usually think of a melody and chords first (often humming them in my head while walking around). I try not to just sit at home and write, but to go other places, novel locations, even just a bench somewhere, which is easier in the summer. Later I try to visualize a scene or emotion, or read a book, for inspiration for lyrics.
4. Which bands influence the sound of DREAM DIARY?
Personally, I love THE SMITHS, SAINT ETIENNE, Lloyd Cole, Kirsty MacColl, THE BEACH BOYS, Margo Guryan, ADVENTURES IN STEREO, THE SUPREMES,…
5. Do any of you play also in other bands now or have you played in other bands in the past?
Yes, we’ve all played in other bands! For instance, Madison, who was our guitarist but is now relocated to Memphis, was/is in a band called COASTING. And, at the moment, I am also backing my friend Kevin up in a band called THE HAIRS.
6. As almost no-one lives on music nowadays, what do you do? …And what are your hobbies?
I work for a small publishing company in the city, and in my spare time like to watch British 50s-60s new wave films and am really good at Scrabble.
7. Is there a real Brooklyn scene? Which are your favourite bands?
Maybe there are a few different Brooklyn scenes that overlap like ven diagrams? As far as trends of the past few years, there’s been Nickelodeon/pizza/90s nostalgia, and lots of religion/cults/witchery references. My favorite local bands include: BIG TROUBLES, THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART, ICE CHOIR, SELEBRITIES. 8. What’s your relationship with Kanine? How did they fall in love with your songs?
Kanine is run by a married couple and their dogs, they live near us and are super nice.
9. I have chosen “She has a way” for the ‘Plutón’ compilation CDR that comes with this issue of my fanzine. What can you tell us about that song?
“She has a way” has a Lloyd Cole lyric lifted, and maybe is a wary love song?
10. Which are your plans for 2012?
I’ve been holed up for the winter working on new songs…
